The Batavia Business and Professional Women’s Club was established 95 years ago in 1921 when all other clubs were strictly composed of men. Members believe themselves to be a cohesive group of dedicated women working together to improve the lives of others. For 97 years the BBPW has been serving the community in a plethora of ways. Currently, we raise thousands of dollars each year to provide scholarships for GVEP students, high school students and a returning Genesee Community College student. The money we raise also goes to support local charitable organizations. In addition we donate funds for Thanksgiving baskets for the less fortunate, and our newest program, Caring Cards, will provide donations throughout the year to support individuals and families in specific crisis situations as determined by Community Action. We also have a community service committee that is tasked with identifying volunteer needs of the community and finding recruits to fill these needs. Requests are made by civic organizations for specific community events. Members then volunteer their services on an individual basis; available time and skills being two of the major criteria considered when volunteering.
The women of the BBPW really care about their community. Each member is unique with different skill sets and abilities; together we compliment each other. The group realizes and strives to utilize the individual member’s strengths and abilities. Members sign up for different Club Committees based on these abilities. There is also ample room for developing leadership skills within the Club. An added bonus of doing good work is the opportunity to meet ten times a year with other women in the community to network and socialize and to learn about other facets of the community through guest speakers and local entertainment.
Our dinner meetings are informal, with numerous opportunities for giving of one’s self and serving one’s community, as well as making new friends who have the same generous hearts. We welcome guests at every meeting but set aside our November meeting as Membership Month where we welcome and cater to guests and provide an opportunity for our guests to get to know members and the Club’s involvement in the community.
